Sergey Kovalev vs Andre Ward is finally confirmed, amidst rumors that the fight might not take place. It is one of the best fights out there, and it’s a relief its taking place. Both fighters are undefeated. Andre Ward is the last Olympic gold medalist from the US. The winner of the fight will easily be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the list, a list lacking the luster after the absence (in terms of activity) of marquee fighters like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

Sergey Kovalev has dominated the light heavyweight division since some years now, knocking out most of the fighters he fought. His rise to dominance has come fast and in style. Out of the 30 fights, he has knocked out 26 of his opponents. He has gone the distance only twice in his professional career. He is seen as a heavy puncher with good boxing skills; he also possesses a great chin, which he may not require against Ward as Ward is not known for his power.

Sergey Kovalev, obviously delighted, said:

“I am very excited to finally get my chance to face Andre Ward on November 19. I want to face the best competition. I want to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Thank you to all of my fans and I hope everyone will come out and see this great fight on November 19 in Las Vegas.”

Andre Ward, once almost the best fighter on the planet, has gone through years of inactivity due to legal troubles; after he impressively won the super-six tournament; and has been on his way back ever since. He moved up in weight to light heavyweight division to seek better challenges. He has only fought at this weight twice, in his last two fights. He brings great defensive ability and movement in the ring. He will be hard to hit, but then Kovalev will not have to hit him too many times. It’s a great match-up because of these two fighters styles.

Andre Ward said:

“I am excited, man. I am looking forward to it. I want to be the light heavyweight champion of the world… We will see you in November. I have been doing this for 22 years and if I am not ready to fight the best now then I will never be ready. I have been preparing for these moments since I been a kid. You got to respect Sergey for the way he has gotten to where he has gotten. He didn’t have any soft touches. He wasn’t protected. He wasn’t really pushed by the media. He is a guy who should get a lot more credit than he has. The winner of this fight could possibly be pound-for-pound #1.”

This is a 50-50 fight on paper, but going into the fight the expert opinion will marginally favor Andre Ward. There is no analyzing this fight, it’s a fight to be seen.
